Program Objectives: The New York Film Academy seeks to promote and advance the art of Visual Storytelling as a transformational and ennobling vehicle to both the creator and audience, with a profound impact on individuals, communities and global society.
History: NYFA was founded in 1992 by Jerry Sherlock, executive producer of The Hunt for Red October (1990), as an alternative to traditional university-based film schools. Designed to demystify and democratize the highly competitive filmmaking industry, NYFA was established to provide accessibility to education in the art of filmmaking. Today, we continue to give a voice to students from all backgrounds and experiences, teaching them how to tell captivating stories through film, media, and the performing arts through a hands-on, project-based approach.

Facilities, Classrooms, and Theatres: New York Film Academy’s Industry Lab in Los Angeles provides students with real-world working experience on major projects for professional clients.
Our students have the opportunity to work on various types of projects from music videos to PSAs to short and feature-length films which immerse them in a professional working environment, enhancing their skills on an artistic and technical level. No matter the client or the project, students come away with a new learning experience and a greater appreciation for their craft.
Scholarships and/or Assistantships: Students can apply for NYFA scholarships, which are another form of institutional financial aid. Scholarships are directly applied to tuition cost and do not need to be repaid. NYFA scholarships are provided by community groups, corporate donors, or government entities; each with its own requirements and application process.
